Eleonora is an exact replica of the schooner Westward. Westward was launched on March 31, 1910 as hull number 692 at the Herreshoff Manufacturing Co. in Bristol, Rhode Island, USA. She was arguably one of the most famous and best known racing schooners in the world. She was designed by Nathanael Greene Herreshoff, the 'Wizard of Bristol', the designer of the America's Cup defenders which turned back all six challenges from 1893 to 1920. Westward was undoubtedly the fastest schooner in the world in 1910. Click on the video link below to view my day on board this legendary yacht. For more information, visit the Eleonora website.
Fleet sails downwind, towards the hills of Antigua.
Antigua Classic, 2009.
Antigua! Yes. I'm here. Attendance at the Antigua Classic is down, but there are six very pretty Cariacou sloops here this year. A couple days ago I shot onboard the beautiful vessel pictured above, Eleonora. I'm sun burned and bruised, and having a great time.
More stories and images from Antigua coming soon.
Great Show!
Thank you to all who visited my booth at the Maine Boat Builders Show last weekend, including my husband Trygve, who brought the kids down on Sunday to see Mummy hard at work. My daughter Iselin decided she was going to contribute her owns 'arts & crafts' to the display, and kept herself duly occupied at the table while I was able to connect with customers and friends, both new and old. My new "Nautical Details" note cards were a big seller this year. Thanks Phin, Joanna and crew for putting on yet another great show!
Boat builder Alec Brained and his dog Bosun opened their doors to my camera yesterday. For years now, I have photographed the boat building industry in Maine as a personal project. The talent here never ceases to amaze me. Thanks Alec.
Launched on September 17, from Rockport Marine, "Adventure," is a 53-foot historic replica of an 18th century colonial trading vessel designed by the late William Baker. She will replace an existing replica that currently is on display at the Charlestowne River landing.
In August, Kollegewidgwok Yacht Club hosted the 80th Atlantic Class National Championship Series in Blue Hill Bay, Maine. Although Blue Hill has for many years had a fleet of Starling Burgess designed Atlantic Class sailboats, they've never before hosted a national championship.
