WoodenBoat Videos

Over the past few years, I have been hired to create increasingly more video content for my clients. I enjoy both forms of storytelling, stills and motion, as each has its attributes and challenges. However, much of the content I create is ‘private’ and cannot be shared with the public. Fortunately, these ‘teaser’ videos I produced for WoodenBoat’s Legend series can be shared. You can subscribe to Woodenboat Mastering Skills to view the full-length videos of each or click on the links below to watch the teasers. The full-length video of GRAYLING has also been made available to the public by WoodenBoat on their YouTube channel.

GRAYLING was built by Frank Rice of East Boothbay, Maine, for use by his brother George Rice in seining for herring and mackerel. She was restored and converted to a private yacht in 1996 by Doug Hylan.

The famous schooner BRILLIANT was designed by Sparkman & Stephens and built by the Nevins Yard in 1930. Since 1953, Brilliant has operated as a sail-training vessel at the Mystic Seaport Museum.

The East Passage 24 was designed by Walter Ansel, and built by Carter Richardson and his team at East Passage Boatwrights.

Greenland Workshop 2024

I'm thrilled to announce that I will be teaching a photo workshop onboard Arctic Earth in Greenland this coming summer!

Iceberg, Disko Bay, Greenland

Arctic Earth is a 56 ft expedition cruising yacht designed by Ed Joy Design and Lyman-Morse. The vessel is captained by Magnus Day, whose experience in arctic cruising is renowned, and Julia Prinselaar as the first mate. As many of you know, my professional photographic career began with cruising to remote destinations. In returning to this type of voyaging, I'll be sharing my experience with a small crew of classmates, allowing for an intimate and thrilling experience combining sailing, nature, and maritime culture as we visually capture the unparalleled beauty of Greenland.

Individual berths are available with an option for full vessel booking on a first-come, first-served basis.
Four expedition members will fly into Ilulissat to meet Alison Langley and the boat crew. Alison has photographed many of the world's most remote and unique locations by way of cruising yachts and is one of the world's premiere nautical photographers. She will share her expertise and creative guidance in this semi-private
workshop setting. We will explore the huge icebergs of Disko Bay and seek hideaway coves for hikes ashore. After
exploring Disko Island, we plan to hop a sail with a southerly breeze along the coast, stopping in Aasiaat and
Attu to check out Greenland's maritime culture – and hopefully a qajaq (kayak) or two at the local qajaq club –
before landing in Sisimiut. Alison will help you develop your individual perspective and style in storytelling, with
instruction on how to work artfully and optimally in the saltwater environment.

Please visit Arctic Earth for details about the vessel and cruise and to book your spot for this exciting workshop.

2023 Maine Classic Yacht Regattas

The Classic Yachts Challenge Series in Maine has grown substantially over the past decade with Boothbay Yacht Club hosting the Shipyard Cup Classics Challenge, followed by Lyman Morse’s Camden Classics Cup, and then three days of racing in the Eggemoggin Reach Regatta series hosted by Rockport Marine, Brooklin Boatyard, and the Castine and Camden Yacht Clubs.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out to us via email if you have a request for prints providing the boat name, sail number, and event. We look forward to seeing see you on the water next year.

2022 Camden Classics Cup

With the dramatic weather, beautiful boats, and the incredible landscape of Penobscot Bay, making images was a dream come true at this year’s Camden Classics Cup. Shout out to my great chase boat driver, Stephen Wolter, for getting me to the right spot.

I have so many images of the boats that it’s impossible to include them all here. If you want to email me and enquire about images of your boat for print orders, please do so, and we will get back to you as soon as we can.

The Becky Award

I am so honored to be the 2nd recipient of the Herreshoff Marine Museum’s Rebecca Chase Herreshoff award at the Now & Then gallery show last month. This annual prize, known affectionately as ‘The Becky’, celebrates and pays homage to the extraordinary life and attributes of the original founder of the Herreshoff Marine Museum.

According to HMM Trustee and Chair of the Selection Committee Alison Ponder, “Recipients of this inaugural award, always women, must share the same exceptional qualities of Becky”. Those qualities include:

  • A passion for boats; few things make them happier than being afloat.

  • A proactive approach to building community and educating the public. Leading from behind and from ahead, they demonstrate through actions their beliefs and values.

  • Selflessness, generously donating time, talent and treasure to preserving history, advancing the sailing community, and offering hope and inspiration to the youth of Rhode Island.

  • A tireless advocacy of this museum, enlisting others to participate, encouraging others to dig deeper and offering sound advice.

Presenting the award was Halsey Herreshoff, a co-founder of the museum with his mother Becky and father Sid. Also present was Norene Rickson, HMM’s Registrar, Librarian and Archivist for the past 20 years and the inaugural winner of the Becky Award last year.

Although the show is over, Russ and I are still selling over two dozen pieces of limited edition art, collectively. A generous portion of the proceeds benefit HMM. The holidays are coming faster than you might expect! Framed pieces can be delivered locally. Unframed art can be shipped anywhere in the world. Click here to order!

Eggemoggin Reach Regatta 2020

The Eggemoggin Reach series was one of the few regattas uninterrupted by COVID-19 this summer. There were no shore events, but all three days were on for racing. The Castine to Camden race was lightly attended as most of the boats sailed through some amazing rain storms, making a dramatic backdrop for the sparse horizon. Camden to Brooklin also had fewer boats compared to years past, but the breeze filled in for a bit and the cumulus clouds added to the spectacular scenery of the Penobscot Bay. Many more boats attended the Egg Reach race day – 63 in total, including three International One Design class from the Northeast Harbor Fleet. Although the winds were light, there was certainly enough to fill the sails and complete the course.

A few people have reached out to me directly to purchase prints which I am happy to fulfill. Please contact me via email if there is a boat you would like to see (more) images or to purchase prints.

Hope you enjoy the slide show below and I’m looking forward to seeing you on the water all next year!
